Grey House is an addition and renovation to a fire damaged house in Los Angeles. Its newly grafted back room, bathroom core, and streamlined stair were drawn from our Standard ADU plans. Its exterior stucco finish is ubiquitous here in LA.

Stucco is not for nothing often referred to as “render.” Stucco renders exteriors, adding texture and tone to architectural forms. Drywall, using joint tape and compound, when primed and painted, does the same at the scale of the room. Asphalt, when layered, with pavement markings applied to it, does the same at the scale of the city. At these three scales, LA is a city of rendering.

Next to the smooth stucco with grit is fluted stucco, raked wet with a corrugated mold to render the relief.
